About
In October 2009 Tom will become a PhD student at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research in Sheffield. He is currently working with the Geographical Association as a voluntary programmes assistant.
Tom previously read for his MA in Human Geography Research at the University of Sheffield. His MA thesis looked at the historical geography of a demolished industrial building. For this project Tom drew upon the ideas and theoretical frameworks of Marx, Benjamin and Foucault to explore the fragmented heterotopic remains of destroyed building.
His PhD will explore the spatial and cultural politics of manners and behaviours at music festivals. The research project will investigate the idea that music festivals are in essence de-controlled spaces where looser more informal behavioural alternatives become permissible.
His main research interests are social and cultural geographies, musical geographies, critical theory, urbanism, local histories (particularly of Sheffield) and Marxism.
