About
My research is a socio-legal study of homophobia and violence in Northern Ireland. Using documentary analysis and oral/life history interviews, my study locates lesbians and gay men in Northern Ireland's socio-political history whilst accounting for the repressive ideologies which have rendered them 'acceptable victims' of violence in post-conflict Northern Ireland.
Inherent to this study is the UK government's socio-legal sanctioning of homosexuality and homosexual identities; the construction of post-colonial, post-partition and post-conflict identities; sexual identity politics; and Foucauldian analyses of power, knowledge and resistance. These issues are examined in relation to the specific dynamics of the ethno-political conflict which dominated and shaped communities in Northern Ireland during the latter half of the 20th Century.
This culturally relevant investigation employs lesbians' and gay men's varied experiences of homophobia to determine the key sites of repression which must be challenged to enact change, equality and freedom from violence.
